Brought to you by the Alamo Drafthouse and Badass Digest.
The Alamo Drafthouse and Badass Digest are incredibly thrilled to announce our new monthly magazine, BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. (You might recognize the name from our Tumblr.) Each month, we're tying the theme of the magazine into that month's programming at the Alamo, titles that are inspired by the Alamo's absolute devotion to the best and the most fun movies of all time, with content written by a stable of great writers including the staff at Badass Digest, the programming team at the Alamo Drafthouse and hugely talented film critics from all around the country (and some overseas)!
Devin Faraci of Badass Digest is Editor-in-Chief, and I'm the Managing Editor. Henri Mazza is Associate Publisher, and Joe Ziemba is the Graphic Designer. Together with our contributors, we are over the moon to bring you a magazine like no other.
So what's on the slate for our first official issue? It's called "Beasts vs. Bots," and it's in honor of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' PACIFIC RIM from director Guillermo del Toro. It includes an incredible interview between Devin and del Toro (the kind of interview that made me clap my hands in glee when I read it), plus articles about the real-life inspiration for GODZILLA, North Korea’s bizarre entry in the Kaiju genre, a lost KING KONG knock-off that might have been Japan’s first giant monster movie, the mysterious origins of VOLTRON, a tribute to Ray Harryhausen and so, so much more. It is jam-packed, and it ties in with the Alamo's July themed programming, titles like THE HOST, EVANGELION 1.1, METROPOLIS, KING KONG, MOTHRA and, of course, GODZILLA. You can find showtimes for these titles here.
Here are some quotes from some important people about BMD!
"Every issue of BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. is designed to deepen the movie-going experience with smart, funny articles that explore the films being shown at the Alamo Drafthouse. But there’s more to it than just what plays on screen; BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. is dedicated to the idea that movies live on beyond the frame, and the magazine includes articles and essays about everything from history to drinking -- all carefully themed with what the Alamo will be playing onscreen that month," says Editor-in-Chief Devin Faraci.
"In spirit and by design, BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH was inspired by vintage underground magazines, everything from EVERGREEN REVIEW to GORE CREATURES. We're harnessing the raw power of our own fandom and sharing it with the world. The design grows out of that same ideal, but with a very clean approach. The magazine is simply a container that allows the content -- and our excitement -- to breathe," says Art Director and Graphic Designer Joe Ziemba.
"With the Alamo, we set out to build a theater that movie fans would love," says Drafthouse Founder and CEO Tim League. "With BIRTH.MOVIES.DEATH. the concept was similar. We set out to create a magazine that serious movie fans wouldn't be able to put down."
So here's the crucial part - where can you read this baby? Well, you can find issues online starting June 27th. Print copies of the magazine will be available at participating Alamo Drafthouse theaters, so check with your local Alamo for availability. The print version looks incredible thanks to some super pro design work by Joe Ziemba, and if you can get a paper copy, you'll want it. But if you don't live near an Alamo theater, every month a digital version will be available at this Scribd link. You can find a button linking you directly to the latest issue on www.drafthouse.com. And we're going to republish many of the pieces on BadassDigest.com itself, so loyal readers won't miss a thing.
So thank you for joining us in this huge new endeavor. We're excited, we're exhausted, we're dying to tell you guys more. Stay tuned, because future issues will be every ounce as rad. And thanks for reading!
