Our friend Matthias Schoenaerts is having a very good year, between Drafthouse Film's own Oscar-nominated BULLHEAD, Jacques Audiard's RUST AND BONE (opposite Marion Cotillard) and, now, he may be getting some more deserved attention from the academy. DEATH OF A SHADOW (Dood van een Schaduw), a short film directed by Tom Van Avermaet, has already won awards making rounds at European fests, and it's now one of eleven films shortlisted for the Oscars.
Schoenaerts plays Nathan Rijckx, a soldier who died during WWI and whose shadow was captured by an enigmatic collector. He's tasked to collect 10,000 shadows and only has two left to go...until love gets in the way. The film is impressively stylized - fans of German expressionism take note, I mean, the movie is about shadows for cryin' out loud! - and features impossibly industrial gadgets straight out of a Gilliam flick.
We're pulling for this one - check out the trailer and see why we're excited.
