We kicked off the day with our annual student panel. Here's the Alamo Drafthouse's Amy Averett, Director of Family and Community Engagement, on that event:
Over 100 film students from Central Texas middle and high schools had the chance to meet and learn from Fantastic Fest directors from around the world on Wednesday afternoon at the Alamo Village. The students, from seven different schools and film programs, watch short films and clips from Fantastic Fest feature films, and had the chance to learn more about the wild world of independent filmmaking. Panelist Mattie Do (DEAREST SISTER) shared her story of being the only female feature film director in her home country of Laos and why horror is a genre that transcends different languages and cultures. Kevin Burke (24X36: A MOVIE ABOUT MOVIE POSTERS) talked about creating a successful crowdfunding campaign and how to develop a narrative for a documentary. The filmmaking collective known as MarkusMilosIanFabian (IMITATIONS) talked about the challenges and payoffs of creating making films as a team. The second half of the event, led by moderator Katy Dager Dial of the Austin Film Society, opened up the floor for questions from students. The event ended with plenty of time for students to talk to the panelists one on one.
Fantastic Arcade continued with terrific panels, competitions and mixers:
And we ended the day with two great events: the Doug Benson Movie Interruption of MONSTER SQUAD with star Andre Gower in attendance, and the traditional off-site dinner feast, this time with director Paul Schrader introducing his film DOG EAT DOG.
And thanks to our friends at Nerdist for this great video recap of Day Four!
