Starting out in the entertainment industry young can mean a lot of advantages for a performer. You get your name out there early, giving you more of an opportunity to make your mark. There’s a strong possibility that you’ll start off in smaller parts, giving you a chance to hone your craft before ending up in a potentially award-winning film. Learning the ins and outs of the industry early on never hurt anyone either! Unfortunately, starting an acting career at a younger age in Hollywood can also mean falling into the dreaded typecasting trap.

Anne Hathaway, despite starting her career in Hollywood at 16, has managed to maintain a resume of diverse roles. Obviously, there’s no formula to avoiding the situation entirely, and what may have worked for one actor may not work for another. Kicking things off with a role like Mia Thermopolis in THE PRINCESS DIARIES series could have resulted in Hathaway being cast in run-of-the-mill girl power films for the rest of the career, but if her resume is any indication, she has taken great strides to avoid that.

While there are some who will forever associate her solely with that early role, Hathaway came fresh off PRINCESS DIARIES: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT to move onto films like HAVOC and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The first focuses on clashing gangs and the second gay cowboys. I feel comfortable saying that the two share enough of a difference from her roles as Mia Thermopolis and Ella from ELLA ENCHANTED. But, just because she moved on to varying parts doesn’t mean we don’t occasionally see her return to her roots. After finishing BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and HAVOC, she did just that with THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.Thankfully, she’s likely to continue to do so throughout her career. Playing to your strengths and doing things that challenge you can be of equal importance, and Hathaway seems to have found a good balance between the two.

When she’s not princessing, queening, or romcoming, you can find her in films like RACHEL GETTING MARRIED. Hathaway’s performance as a drug-addled disaster sister is both emotional and well performed, throwing in a new angle to her career. She would later try out her cat burglar skills as the one and only Selina Kyle in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. While the final installment to Nolan’s Batman trilogy wasn’t met with as much acclaim as the first two, Hathaway got to check off the “action star” box on her actress bingo card.

Her pipes have given her the opportunity to do musicals like LES MISERABLES,but her voice has also landed her several voice-over gigs throughout her career. In 2005 she took over Red Puckett from the renowned Tara Strong in HOODWINKED, has held recurring gigs on both FAMILY GUY and THE SIMPSONS, and has held down roles in a handful of other animated films.

Anne Hathaway is a woman of immense talent and strong convictions. Both have undoubtedly helped her build the well-rounded filmography she has under her belt, all of which is by no means mentioned in this piece. The actress has several projects in the pipeline, and all do well to illustrate her desire to take on new and different roles. Her current film, COLOSSAL, does so as well. Nacho Vigalondo’s film features Hathaway as an unintentional kaiju wielding drunk who’s just doin’ the best she can. You can’t go wrong with a duo like Jason Sudeikis and Anne Hathaway. Toss in a giant monster? Please and thank you!
