Fantastic Arcade 2015 Day one recap

Fantastic Fest hits the halfway mark, but Fantastic Arcade has just begun!

Fantastic Arcade veterans will remember last year when Banana Chalice creator Kyle Reimergarten managed to make most of The Highball sing along with him. This year he inaugurated the pleasure dome of Fantastic Arcade by making us all hold hands as we plunged down the glittering geometric caverns of he and Ian Snyder's Versnooth-  a 3D maze game that places the player into the role of a parasitic organism with sonar-like senses.

The pair then segued into an explanation and tournament play of Ian's abstract videosport Botolo. Early tournament action continued with Inversus, with creator Ryan Juckett on hand to emcee.

Alan Hazelden and Ryan Roth talked next about the creation of A Good Snowman is Hard to Build, a turn based puzzle game with charming artwork and whip smart mechanics.

Loren Schmidt followed with a talk and play session of their cryptic and haunting Strawberry Cubes, and Nathalie Lawhead followed with selections from Tetrageddon Games, Froggy and her unhinged new creation Anatomically Incorrect Dinosaurs

The crowd made their way to the Empire Control Room shortly afterwards, for an opening party, with a DJ sets by Crap, Nobody Loves Me's Ben Esposito,  Kokoromi cohorts Phil Fish & Damien DiFede and Devin Horseman, with visuals by Zak Ayles and ALEA's Cale Bradbury. Party games were rolled out by guest developers and SK Games, including the bizarre-but-cuddly Catnips and Butt Sniffin' Pugs, World's Fastest Pizza, as well as Super Russian Roulette, and the beautiful Slavic fairytale game Forest of Sleep
