2018 Programs

  • AGFA PRESENTS: I WAS A TEENAGE SERIAL KILLER + MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE
Sarah Jacobson's punk-spirited DIY films combine B-movie aesthetics and riot grrrl feminism in brand new 2K preservations.
  • FANTASTIC SHORTS 2018
After an infectious wild west musical that captures a friendly cactus’ tragic and thorny day-to-day reality, this year’s melanage of fantastic short-form cinema wades through the murky waters of human intimacy, be they healthy, toxic, romantic, or just plain bizarre. Learn how a potato chip empire can be frustrated by forbidden robot love, cringe through uncomfortable break-ups and absurdist apologies and be hypnotized by eerie Scandinavian puppetry. It’s a cavalcade of wildly original visions capped off with a cautionary comedy that suggests that too original an idea may actually be detrimental to the fortitude of one's cranium.
  • HBO FOLKLORE
Bringing together some of the best genre directors currently working, HBO Asia has put together the ultimate horror show, and Fantastic Fest is delighted to be premiering two of its scariest episodes!
  • SHORT FUSE 2018
We’ve once again lit the fuse to a powder keg of provocations with our annual celebration of short-subject horror of all stripes. Every horror hyphenate under the full moon is accounted for as the program weaves between supernatural frights and unnerving dread, proceeding from a gory apocalypse to a topical splatter comedy. All this plus the latest niche pastiche from the comedic Canucks that comprise ASTRON-6. You can expect your retinas to be painted with more than a few coats of red by the time the lights come up. Presented by Stage 13
  • SHORTS WITH KIMCHI: KOREAN GENRE SHORTS
Continuing the tradition inaugurated with last year’s spotlight on Arabic short films, Fantastic Fest is ecstatic to once more showcase short-form cinema from a unique region of the world. Inspired by this year’s presiding theme, the SHORTS WITH KIMCHI program celebrates both burgeoning and established Korean filmmakers across five distinctly brilliant short films, each of which demonstrate the peninsula's remarkable dexterity for indelible genre cinema. Martial arts mayhem mingles with pointed cultural commentary, a meditative mystery precedes an outrageous and nostalgic riff on a contemporary Hollywood musical, and FF alumn Lee Kyoung-mi (THE TRUTH BENEATH) joins the throng with a delirious psychodrama starring LADY VENGEANCE herself Lee Young-ae!
  • SHORTS WITH LEGS 2018
For those with a predilection for eccentric, off-kilter, and just plain wackadoo artists whose avant-garde tendencies innovatively ricochet within genre film frameworks, this bipedal sidebar serves up a special spectrum of audacious weirdness from beguiling filmmakers who prefer to color outside the lines of convention. Seemingly benign topics like “bread” and “hair” are exhaustively and anarchically deconstructed, the history of major league baseball is re-written with Satanic undercurrents, familiar tropes are upset and upended with inspired ruptures of practiced surrealism, and the humanist hijinx of famed clown Phil Burgers precedes perhaps the grossest and most viscerally uncomfortable short this section has ever seen!
